A tragic accident occurred on Saturday evening in New York City when a large Mexican Navy training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in the deaths of at least two people and injuries to 19 others.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the incident, stating that the vessel involved was the Cuauhtémoc, a tall ship belonging to the Mexican Navy.

The ship had been visiting the city as part of a ceremonial tour and was carrying 277 people at the time of the crash. Four of the injured remain in critical condition.

According to the mayor, the cause of the collision was a mechanical failure that led to the captain losing control of the ship shortly after it departed from Pier 17.

Authorities said that all injuries were sustained onboard and that no one fell into the water.

Video footage shared on social media revealed that the ship's 147-foot-high masts were too tall to pass safely under the Brooklyn Bridge.

The vessel had not adjusted its route to accommodate the bridge’s clearance, leading to a direct impact with the structure.

The Cuauhtémoc had been scheduled to return to New York in July 2026 to take part in celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, according to media reports.
