The French Parliament elected on Tuesday Yael Braun-Pivet as a new speaker to make her the first woman ever to hold such a position in the history of the parliament.

The first thing Braun-Pivet mentioned in her inaugural speech was the turnover of Roe V. Wade rights of abortion.

She said: "The brutal decision handed down last Friday by the US Supreme Court, that reversed its commitment, that shocked us so much, is a stark reminder to be vigilant."

"Nothing should be taken for granted. History is made of great progress but is always under threat of being reversed," she added.

"This right was fought for and was inalienable. It is my conviction as a woman today is that we need to be the watchdog so that it stays in place forever."

Braun-Pivet was a former lawyer and lived for several years in Asian countries such as Taiwan and Japan. In addition, she recently started to give free legal aids.

Furthermore, she belongs to Eastern European Jews ancestors who moved to France in the 1930s according to France 24 reported.

Regarding her political career, she is one of the fresh faces who had a previous experience with the Socialist Party.

The newly elected speaker joined Macron's alliance a year before she became parliament member in 2017.

Braun-Pivet will now share the political leadership of the French state along with the second woman in the history of France who served as prime minister Elisabeth Borne.
