The fierce competition in China, the world's largest automobile market, is about to get a fresh injection as Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi announces plans to launch an electric vehicle.

The move was revealed on a Chinese government website earlier this month, outlining the specifications of the new cars that will need approval from local authorities before they can be sold.

Images released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showcased Xiaomi's upcoming S.Y7 car, a 4-door vehicle that bears a striking resemblance to the Porsche Taycan.

The images provided a glimpse of the car's exterior design and wheel details.

According to reports from specialized Chinese automotive media, production of the electric vehicle is expected to begin on a commercial scale next month, with deliveries to customers anticipated in February.

Xiaomi is said to have entered into an agreement with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd. for the manufacturing of its electric cars.

The vehicle is around 5 meters in length and will be offered in two versions: one equipped with remote sensing Lidar technology and the other without, as reported by the website.

The car is expected to feature either a 220 kW single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration or a dual-motor configuration with 495 kW of power.

Chinese automakers are reportedly displeased with the government's website for disclosing specifications of their cars before official launches, causing concerns in an already competitive market.
