Spanish coach Xabi Alonso has declined an approach from Olympique de Marseille to take over as head coach following the recent dismissal of Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi.

According to RMC Sport, Marseille contacted Alonso to succeed De Zerbi, but the former Spanish international was not enthusiastic about taking on the role at this stage.

The report added that several candidates are under consideration, including Walid Regragui, head coach of the Moroccan national team, former Rennes manager Habib Beye, and Sérgio Conceição, currently in charge of Al-Ittihad.

De Zerbi, 46, had been in charge of Marseille since the start of last season. During his tenure, he oversaw 69 matches, recording 39 wins, 22 defeats, and eight draws.

He also guided the club to qualification for the UEFA Champions League last season.

Marseille are now expected to accelerate their search for a new manager as they look to stabilize the team and maintain their competitive ambitions domestically and in Europe.
