Tomiko Itooka, recognized as the world’s oldest living person, has passed away at the age of 116, according to reports from Japanese media.

NHK, Japan's public television network, confirmed her death on December 29, 2024, at a retirement home in Ashiya, located in the southern Hyogo prefecture.

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itooka lived through both World Wars, and was the oldest of three siblings. She leaves behind four children and five grandchildren.

In August 2024, after the passing of Spain's Maria Branyas Morera at 117, Itooka was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living person.

Ashiya's mayor, Ryosuke Takashima, expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, "During her long life, she has given us much courage and hope."

As of September 2024, Japan had more than 95,000 centenarians, 88% of whom were women. The longest-living person ever recorded was Jeanne Louise Calment of France, who lived to 122 years and 164 days.
