Global football fans are turning their attention tonight to the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will officially launch the biggest edition in the tournament’s history.

The 2026 World Cup is being hosted for the first time by three countries, Mexico, the United States, and Canada, and will feature 48 national teams, marking a major expansion of the competition.

The opening ceremony will take place shortly before the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, featuring a major international music show with global stars including Shakira, Burna Boy, J Balvin, and Tyla. Shakira will also perform the tournament’s official anthem.

This edition represents a new era for world football, with more teams, more matches, and a longer tournament schedule than ever before, lasting over a month.

Mexico also makes history as the first country to host World Cup matches in three different editions, following 1970 and 1986.

As the ceremony begins at the iconic Azteca Stadium, the countdown officially starts for what is expected to be the largest and most watched World Cup in history.
