The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially begins today as hosts Mexico launch the tournament against South Africa in the opening Group A clash.
The match, which takes place in Mexico City, marks the start of a historic edition of the World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring 48 national teams for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Mexico enter the match as strong favourites to top Group A and open their campaign with victory, backed by experienced goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, making a record sixth World Cup appearance, and forward Raúl Jiménez leading the attack.
Teenage midfielder Gilberto Mora is also expected to feature after breaking into the national setup with impressive domestic performances.
South Africa, meanwhile, are returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2010, when they last hosted the tournament.
The squad is largely composed of domestic league players, although Burnley striker Lyle Foster provides a key attacking threat as they look to cause an early upset.
Mexico are heavily favoured to win the fixture, with bookmakers placing them as clear leaders in Group A.
However, South Africa will aim to frustrate the hosts and make a strong statement on their long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.
The opening match sets the tone for what is expected to be a highly competitive tournament, as teams begin their quest for a place in the expanded Round of 32.
The World Cup continues later in the day with additional Group A fixtures as the global football festival officially gets underway.
