The World Health Organization (WHO) held a press conference on the sidelines of the Sixth Brussels Conference "Health and the Impact of the Social and Economic Crisis in Syria" today, Friday, May 6th.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean at the International Organization, said: Today, approximately one person out of every three people in Syria suffers from internal displacement, in addition to limited access to health care and other basic services, where 90% of the population suffers from poverty.

Al-Mandhari added that the Corona pandemic is exacerbating the situation, and the protracted crisis in Syria and the deterioration of the social and economic conditions there are pushing millions of other people into extreme poverty, and increasing their exposure to multiple health threats.

Al-Mandhari explained that 75% of families suffer from the inability to purchase their living necessities, meet their living needs, and live in inappropriate sanitary conditions.
