On Friday, White House spokesman Gad Derry said that impeaching outgoing US President Donald Trump, with only 12 days remaining until the end of his term, would only exacerbate the pision in the country, according to Reuters.

Earlier, US House of Representative Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that she had spoken with military officials and senior White House employees about precautions in place to prevent Trump from ordering a nuclear strike or conducting other military hostilities.

"The situation of this unhinged president could not be more dangerous, and we must do everything that we can to protect the American people from his unbalanced assault on our country and our democracy," she added.

On his part, Trump announced in a historic precedent that he would not attend the inauguration of the US President-elect, Joe Biden.

He tweeted: “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

Trump's remarks came hours after his supporters stormed the capitol building, in an attempt to block congressional approval of President-elect Joe Biden's victory.
