Derby County have completed the signing of Wayne Rooney as player-coach on Tuesday. The England international has signed an initial 18-month deal with Derby as he will join the team starting from January 2020.
Rooney will have a task in the technical staff of the head coach Phillip Cocu, who was appointed as new manager after the departure of former coach Frank Lampard. Cocu expressed his happiness of Rooney signing to his side.
"Wayne Rooney is an extremely talented and top-class footballer," Cocu said according to The Guardian.
"It is an exciting prospect for him to be joining Derby County and he can bring so much to this squad, both on and off the pitch. He has enjoyed a wonderful career, both in club football and for England, and he still has so much to give as well," he added.
The 33-year-old player began his adventure in world football since 2002 in Everton F.C. Two years later, he moved to the Old Trafford, where he became Manchester United’s record goalscorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances.
Thirteen years later, he returned to his former club Everton, before he joined DC United last summer. Rooney appeared with his national team on 120 occasions as he is England’s all-time record scorer with 53 goals.
