Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior has sparked major controversy over his future at Real Madrid following Sunday’s El Clásico clash against Barcelona.

During Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu, manager Xabi Alonso substituted Vinicius in the 71st minute.

The decision visibly infuriated the 25-year-old attacker. Cameras captured the Brazilian shouting angrily as he left the pitch, muttering words of frustration directed toward his coach.

Since Alonso’s appointment as head coach in the summer of 2025, Vinicius has become a source of tension for the Spanish coach.

This season, Vinicius has started ten matches and been substituted in seven of them. He was also left on the bench against Real Oviedo, Getafe, and Olympique de Marseille.

According to international broadcaster DAZN, Vinicius shouted at Alonso as he walked off the pitch, saying: “I’m leaving the team… I’m leaving… that’s the best thing.”

It was the first time the Brazilian had openly opposed his coach’s decision so directly, reacting angrily when his number appeared on the fourth official’s board, replaced by his compatriot Rodrygo Goes.

After storming straight into the dressing room, Vinicius was calmed down by goalkeeping coach Luis López, who convinced him to return to the bench. Minutes later, he rejoined his teammates to celebrate the victory.

Spanish outlet Defensa Central later reported that tensions eased after the match. Alonso preferred to resolve the matter privately, and Vinicius apologized, explaining his emotional reaction.

“It’s my fault. I’m really sorry… I just wanted to keep playing,” he reportedly told his manager. Alonso accepted the apology.

Following the incident, Vinicius addressed Real Madrid fans on Instagram, writing: “A message to all Real Madrid supporters, especially those who came to the Bernabéu to cheer for us, this is El Clásico. There was a lot of intensity on and off the pitch.

We try to stay balanced, though it’s not always easy. We never mean disrespect — not to young players or to the fans. We know our responsibility when we step on the field, and that’s what we showed today. Hala Madrid.”
