Vancouver International Airport, one of the largest in Canada, was briefly closed following reports of a “hijacking” involving a small aircraft, according to authorities.
Police stated they received a report at around 1:10 p.m. indicating that a Cessna 172 — a single-engine, four-seat aircraft — had been diverted from the Vancouver Island area and was approaching the airspace around Vancouver International Airport, located in western Canada.
According to Al-Nashra News, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) clarified in a statement:
“The suspect was the only person on board the plane and was apprehended without incident shortly after landing the aircraft, less than an hour later.”
As a result, nine incoming flights were diverted from Vancouver International Airport. In a statement, the airport confirmed that landing operations were halted for 39 minutes.
