Van Bommel Agrees Deal to Become Belgium Head Coach Until 2028

Belgium have reached an agreement with former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel to become the national team's new head coach, with the 48-year-old set to sign a contract running until June 2028.

Van Bommel will replace Rudi Garcia, who is expected to leave the position following Belgium's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. 

While the contracts have yet to be officially signed, all parties have reportedly agreed to the terms, with a formal announcement expected once the remaining paperwork is completed.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the development, writing on X: "Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go! Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia."

The appointment will mark Van Bommel's first role as a national team coach after establishing himself at club level. 

During his managerial career, he has coached PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp, where he enjoyed his greatest success by leading the Belgian club to a historic Belgian Pro League and Belgian Cup double during the 2022-23 season.

Belgium will look to Van Bommel to lead the next phase of the national team's rebuilding process as the Red Devils shift their focus toward qualifying for UEFA Euro 2028.

The Red Devils reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before their campaign ended with a defeat to eventual champions Spain.

Van Bommel's expected arrival signals the beginning of a new era for Belgium as the federation aims to build a squad capable of competing for major international trophies beyond the country's celebrated golden generation.
