Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance to defeat Manchester City 3–0 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Wednesday night in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.

The Spanish giants were inspired by a stunning first-half display from Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde, who scored a remarkable hat-trick to give Los Blancos a strong advantage ahead of the second leg.

Real Madrid took control of the match midway through the first half when Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a powerful strike.

The midfielder doubled the lead just seven minutes later in the 27th minute, capitalizing on Madrid’s attacking pressure.

Valverde completed his sensational hat-trick in the 42nd minute, finishing off a swift attacking move to send the home crowd into celebration and put the hosts firmly in command before halftime.

The scoreline remained unchanged in the second half as Madrid comfortably secured the victory.

Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush started the match on the bench for Manchester City.

The attacker, who joined the English champions from Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2025 winter transfer window in a deal reportedly worth €75 million, is still searching for his first goal in the Champions League with City.

The clash marked another chapter in one of the tournament’s most recurring modern rivalries, with Real Madrid and Manchester City meeting in the knockout rounds of the Champions League for the fifth consecutive season.

The encounter was also the 16th meeting between the two clubs in European competition.

Earlier this season, City had already beaten Real Madrid 2–1 at the Bernabéu during the competition’s league phase, but the Spanish side responded emphatically in this knockout meeting.
