A United Airlines aircraft struck a highway light pole while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport in the United States before landing safely, prompting an investigation by aviation authorities.

Flight 169, arriving from Venice, Italy, hit a light pole on the New Jersey Turnpike at around 2:00 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Boeing 767-400, carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members, landed without further incident.

United Airlines confirmed that no injuries were reported. The airline said the flight crew has been temporarily removed from duty while damage to the aircraft is assessed and a full safety review is carried out.

The incident is being investigated by both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Officials said the impact damaged the highway light pole, and a tow truck travelling on the motorway also struck debris. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and later discharged.

Airport authorities carried out runway inspections immediately after landing, and operations at Newark Liberty resumed normally.

The NTSB has requested cockpit voice recordings and flight data, with investigators expected on site. A preliminary report is due within 30 days.
