Political arguments regarding immigration in the U.S. continue to grow, particularly over President Jo Biden’s enforcement of immigration laws in southern states. Yi Xin, a Beijing-based international affairs commentator, criticized these policies in his latest opinion piece, entitled: "US immigration policy: A masterpiece of tragicomedy" published in China Daily.
Yi pointed out that the United States has always prided itself on being a nation of immigrants and a "beacon of opportunity and hope". For decades, Mexicans have made up the largest group of immigrants to the country. However, Yi noted that the previous US President had promised to build a "big, beautiful wall" along the border with Mexico, which has sparked controversy. According to a survey conducted during Iowa's Republican caucuses, about 9 out of 10 caucus-goers backed the idea of building a wall, with around 7 in 10 strongly supporting it.
Yi believes that the United States should adopt a more consistent plan that truly reflects its position as a "beacon", one that acknowledges the complexity of migration while valuing the dignity of those seeking a better life. Until such a plan is implemented, the world will remain baffled by this paradox.
