The Biden administration has approved a $345 million military aid package for Taiwan, marking its first significant move to help the country counter China.

The package, which includes man-portable air defense systems, intelligence and surveillance capabilities, firearms, and missiles, will be drawn from the US's existing military stockpiles.

The aim of the aid is to help Taiwan deter Chinese aggression by making the cost of an invasion too high. While China has protested the move, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense has expressed its gratitude for the commitment to its security.

The aid is in addition to nearly $19 billion in military sales that the US has approved for Taiwan, but which have been hampered by supply chain issues.
