Uruguay Resolve Travel Crisis ahead of World Cup Opener Against KSA

Uruguay have overcome a last-minute logistical crisis ahead of their opening match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Saudi Arabia, after a delayed flight briefly disrupted their preparations in the United States.

The Uruguayan squad arrived in Miami after a three-hour delay caused by administrative complications at an airport in Mexico, where authorities reportedly prevented the team’s aircraft from departing due to missing documentation. 

The issue, according to reports, was linked to a paperwork error attributed to FIFA, forcing urgent coordination between the Uruguayan Football Association, tournament officials, and local authorities.

Despite the disruption, Uruguay eventually completed their journey on a private flight and resumed their scheduled preparations without further complications.

The team was able to settle into their base in Miami ahead of their Group Stage opener, bringing an end to concerns that had briefly overshadowed their World Cup campaign.

The delay, however, had immediate consequences off the pitch. Uruguay’s scheduled pre-match press conference was canceled, with head coach Marcelo Bielsa unable to meet media obligations as planned. 

The Uruguayan federation may also face a financial sanction for failing to fulfil mandatory media duties, although officials worked quickly to resolve the situation and avoid further escalation.

Attention has now shifted fully to the pitch, where Uruguay will face Saudi Arabia in a highly anticipated opening Group Stage encounter. Both teams are aiming to start their World Cup campaign with a strong result as they look to build momentum in a competitive group.

The match is scheduled to take place in Miami, with kickoff set for early Tuesday morning Cairo time. 

Italian referee Maurizio Mariani will oversee the fixture, with FIFA introducing a symbolic pink uniform initiative as part of its broader campaign supporting social awareness causes during the tournament.
