Stephanie Williams, Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), has called for sanctions to be imposed on anyone who is hindering the Geneva talks on Libya.

In press statements, Williams added that both parties are deeply worried about the international intervention that has intensified since last year.

She added: "They need to take back the country's sovereignty and the way to do that is through elections."

She expressed that several Libyans were asking her to place sanctions on the spoilers of the upcoming talks, without specifying their names.

Williams stated that the Libyans have requested that any official involved in the Geneva talks should be removed from any role within the next government in order to prevent faltering conflict of interest negotiations.

Williams emphasised the need for elections to be held in order to establish a 'unified' executive authority as soon as possible.

She stated that the dysfunction has become so serious that the need for reform is urgent.

Williams said: "Frankly, if you want to move into national elections, there is a need for a single executive authority, so you need a national government to plan for the elections.
