UNHR Spokesperson Jeremy Laurence, together with Ajith Sunghay, the Head of UN Human Rights Office for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said that the people of Gaza have endured a relentless barrage of deadly Israeli air strikes over the past week.

He also noted that they have been forced to relocate to supposed 'safe places' that are anything but safe.

Sunghay pointed out that since July 12, 503 Palestinians, mostly in central Gaza, have been killed, according to Gaza's health ministry. Multiple mass casualty incidents on July 13 and 14 in the Al Mawasi area in Khan Younis, the Ash Shati' (Beach) Refugee Camp, and an UNRWA school at An Nuseirat have resulted in over 124 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. These atrocities were followed by further strikes on July 15 and 16, resulting in the deaths of 59 Palestinians and the injury of at least 76 others.

Sunghay emphasized that Israel's evacuation order on July 9 has forced families to make an impossible choice: stay amidst active hostilities or risk fleeing to areas still subject to attack and with scarce resources. Nowhere in Gaza is safe – not the roads, shelters, hospitals, nor the declared humanitarian zones.

It was stressed once again that the violence must cease. There must be a ceasefire, the hostages must be released, and the reconstruction of Gaza must commence. The occupation must end, accountability must be served, and the internationally agreed two-State solution must become a reality.
