UNFP Executive Director, Natalia Kanem, has described the situation in the Gaza Strip as being beyond despair. During an interview with the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) while in Japan to discuss cooperation with Japanese government officials, Kanem explained that providing for the basic needs of mothers in Gaza has become difficult.
She noted that the aid that is arriving is only the tip of the iceberg. Kanem emphasized that pregnant women in Gaza are struggling to obtain sufficient water and food, and that 180 babies are born every day under extremely harsh conditions.
She explained that there has been an increase in miscarriages, cesarean sections, and medication needs among pregnant women. She emphasized that these procedures are safe, but they are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.
