As part of the celebration of World Radio Day, UNESCO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Media Authority, and Egyptian Radio, organized a training workshop titled “Integrating Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Scientific Coverage of Climate Change for Radio Broadcasters and Content Developers.”
The workshop saw the participation of a distinguished group of broadcasters from Egyptian Radio and Nile Radio Network.
The workshop aimed to enhance broadcasters’ capacities in scientific media coverage of climate change issues and to raise awareness about the importance of using UNESCO-led Media and Information Literacy (MIL) tools to produce radio content that accurately and objectively reflects scientific facts.
The workshop was attended by a distinguished group of experts and specialists in media and climate change, including Mohamed Nawar, Head of Egyptian Radio; Dr. Sally Tayeh, Lecturer and Head of the Media Department at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport; Ms. Radwa Hashem, Researcher in Environmental Media and Climate Issues; Dr. Bisher Imam, Director of the Science Sector at UNESCO; and Dr. Khaled Khairy, a climate affairs expert and specialist.
The discussion sessions addressed key topics such as the role of radio in raising awareness about climate change, utilizing MIL tools to develop media content, and combating misinformation related to climate change.
The workshop also included interactive sessions and practical training on developing radio messages targeting various segments of Egyptian society, highlighting climate issues and their impacts.
The workshop concluded with a session in which the participating teams presented five key radio messages developed during the training, aimed at spreading environmental awareness through broadcasting.
In her speech, Dr. Nuria Sanz, Director of UNESCO’s Regional Office in Egypt and Sudan, emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships between media institutions and environmental organizations to ensure the delivery of accurate and meaningful content that enhances public environmental awareness.
UNESCO affirmed that this workshop marks the beginning of upcoming training sessions targeting all media professionals, including television, print media, and digital content creators.
Dr. Ashraf Sobhy, Minister of Youth and Sports, stated that celebrating World Radio Day is an important occasion to reaffirm the significance of radio as a vital media tool that plays a crucial role in serving society.
He extended his gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Ahmed Al-Muslimani, Head of the National Media Authority, and Ms. Nuria Sanz for their fruitful and effective collaboration.
This workshop is part of UNESCO’s efforts to support media professionals in producing content that enhances public understanding of environmental issues and highlights the role of radio in disseminating accurate knowledge and information about climate change, contributing to building sustainable community awareness.
