The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed Iraq`s Babylon as a World Heritage Site after a three-decade effort by the Middle East country.

Since 1983, Iraq organized campaigns, demanding that this city, dating from 4,000 years ago, be included in the prestigious list of the World Heritage.

The site is known for the Hanging Gardens of Babylon on the list of the World's Seven Wonders.

It has suffered over the past years, while engineers were building a palace for Saddam Hussein and it was used in the last few years as a base for US troops.

UNESCO`s officials held a meeting in Azerbaijan to take the decision of listing the Iraqi city of Babylon as one of the Organisation's landmarks; these sites are protected by international treaties.
