Unemployment in the Gaza Strip has surged to an alarming 85%, according to Daniel Cork, the International Labour Organization (ILO) representative in the Palestinian territories, underscoring the severe impact of recent regional developments on the labor market.
Speaking to Al Qahera News on Friday on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, Cork highlighted the deteriorating working conditions across Palestinian areas. “Private sector companies are struggling to plan for the future under these critical circumstances,” he said, noting that the ongoing crisis has placed immense strain on employment and economic activity.
Cork explained that the ILO is working to identify solutions aimed at improving workers’ conditions, including support for recovery programs in both the West Bank and Gaza. These initiatives are designed to help private sector businesses remain operational and create job opportunities, offering a measure of hope amid challenging conditions.
He added that employment in West Bank cities has also declined significantly, with unemployment rising sharply. Trade restrictions between the West Bank and Jordan have heavily impacted businesses and the private sector, contributing to the loss of approximately 200,000 jobs since the outbreak of the conflict.
Despite the challenges, Cork emphasized ongoing international efforts to support the Palestinian economy. “We continue to receive assistance from several countries to help establish projects in the West Bank and Gaza,” he said, noting that grants are also being provided in cooperation with other United Nations agencies.
The stark figures highlight the deepening economic crisis facing Palestinians, as international organizations intensify efforts to stabilize the labor market and support long-term recovery.
