The United Nations has emphasised the irreplaceable role of the World Health Organization (WHO) in global humanitarian efforts, following former US President Donald Trump’s executive order to withdraw the United States from the organisation. The withdrawal, set to take effect after 12 months, has sparked widespread concern among international bodies.

Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), highlighted WHO’s indispensable contributions, particularly in regions such as Gaza, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Sudan. “WHO reaches areas others cannot. It is a cornerstone of the international humanitarian system,” Laerke said.

The WHO expressed deep regret over the US decision. Spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic voiced hope that the United States would reconsider. “WHO plays a critical role in safeguarding the health and security of all people, including Americans. From addressing root causes of diseases to building stronger health systems and responding to emergencies, the WHO is often present in high-risk areas where few dare to go,” Jasarevic stated.

The withdrawal decision comes as a significant blow to the WHO, given the United States’ status as its largest single donor, contributing 18% of the organisation’s budget in 2023.

Washington first joined the WHO in 1948 following bipartisan approval by Congress. While Trump previously initiated a withdrawal process in 2022 during his first term, the decision was reversed under President Joe Biden’s administration.

The global health body expressed optimism that a resolution could still be reached to preserve US membership. “A world with a strong WHO is a healthier and safer world for everyone,” Jasarevic added.
