The United Nations has revealed that approximately 55% of buildings in the Gaza Strip, most of which are residential, have suffered major damage or destruction due to the ongoing Israeli war on the territory, now in its eighth month.
According to a publication by the UN Satellite Center, UNOSAT, on the IX platform, approximately 137,297 buildings, or around 55% of structures in Gaza, have been affected.
This estimation is based on a comparison between satellite images taken on May 3, 2024, and other images collected since May 2023 up to October 15, just a week after the start of the war on Gaza.
The center stated that based on their analysis, they identified 36,591 buildings as completely destroyed, 16,513 as severely damaged, 47,368 as moderately damaged, and 36,825 as potentially affected.
The analysis, published on May 31, confirms that nearly all of these buildings, totaling approximately 135,142, are residential structures.
This latest revelation underscores the dire situation in Gaza and the urgent need for international action to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the prolonged conflict.
