The United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution on Friday demanding a halt to all arms sales to Israel.

The council cited warnings of "genocide" in Israel's war in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 33,000 people.

The resolution, which passed with 28 member states voting in favor, six opposed, and 13 abstaining, is the first time that the UN's top rights body has taken a position on the ongoing conflict in Palestine.

The text of the resolution called on countries to "cease the sale, transfer, and diversion of arms, munitions, and other military equipment to Israel" in order to prevent further violations of international humanitarian law and human rights abuses.

The resolution emphasized that the International Court of Justice had previously ruled that there was a "plausible risk of genocide" in Gaza. Israel's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Meirav Eilon Shahar, criticized the resolution, calling it "a stain for the Human Rights Council and for the UN as a whole."
