The United Nations (UN) General Assembly resumed its emergency special session, yesterday, Tuesday, on the situation in Palestine, in light of the ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip.
The General Assembly adopted a draft resolution submitted by the Arab and Islamic groups, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, for humanitarian reasons.
During the special session, the member states of the United Nations voted on the draft resolution, which was entitled “Protecting Civilians and Advancing Legal and Humanitarian Obligations.”
153 Countries voted in favor of the draft resolution, approved, 10 countries rejected, and 23 countries abstained from voting. Thus, the draft resolution achieved the two-thirds majority required for adoption.
Egypt holds the rotating presidency of the Arab Group, and its permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Osama Abdel Khaleq, said, “The draft resolution addresses the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and the suffering that civilians face, and also calls for the need to protect them, in accordance with international humanitarian law.”
