The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has warned that clearing the massive destruction in Gaza will require hundreds of billions of dollars, describing the scale of devastation as “unprecedented.”

Speaking to Cairo News Channel, Jacques Seilliers, UNDP’s representative in Palestine, said that approximately 84% of Gaza’s buildings and housing units have been completely destroyed, while in some areas, destruction has reached 42% almost entirely. He revealed that an estimated 55 million cubic meters of rubble cover the enclave, posing severe challenges to removal efforts.

Seilliers explained that the process faces enormous obstacles, including unexploded ordnance and the possibility of victims still trapped beneath the debris, making it essential to proceed cautiously and ensure proper identification of the deceased.

He also praised Egypt’s initiative to host the Gaza Reconstruction Conference in November, calling it a “crucial and timely step” to address the urgent needs of the Palestinian people and mobilize international support for rebuilding the war-torn Strip.

The UNDP continues to coordinate with regional and international partners to assess damage, clear debris, and plan sustainable recovery efforts aimed at restoring essential infrastructure and providing shelter for displaced families.
