Alessandro Fracacetti, Representative of the United Nations (UN) Development Program in Egypt, affirmed that the Sharm El-Sheikh Action Plan affirms the international community's commitment to keeping the global average temperature from rising below two degrees Celsius.
For example, the UN representative said, more than 200 million LED lights have been sold in the Egyptian market since 2014 as a result of UNDP's joint work with the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity on the market shift to energy-efficient lighting systems.
Complementing the national program to convert street lighting fixtures to LEDs, these joint efforts have led to significant reductions in electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Egypt's conversion to LED has reduced the country's total electricity consumption by at least 10%, a milestone in the transition to sustainable energy.
