On Wednesday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Libya confirmed that the ceasefire resolution paves the way for an end to the conflict and the creation of conditions conducive to peace and stability.

In a statement, the UN organization said that It is estimated that for the beginning of 2021, 1.3 million people will be in need of some form of humanitarian assistance in Libya, an increase of 40 per cent, compared to 2020.

“More than 10 thousand migrants and refugees have been returned to Libya during the current year, which exceeds the numbers for the whole of 2019,” the office stated.

The statement added the coronavirus cases in Libya are increasing. It added that there is a 76% increase in the number of confirmed cases in October.

It noted that the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 continue to erode people’s living standards and access to public services. Fuel shortages and continuous power cuts have also severely affected people’s living conditions, as well as impacting the functioning of health facilities.

“There are 392 thousand displaced persons and 585 thousand migrants and refugees in Libya. The office has contacted 309 thousand people,” the statement noted.

Regarding the funding operations for assistance, the office stated, “$ 129.8 million is required and $ 96.9 million has been funded, and the progress made is 75%.”
