As the war in Gaza nears its second year and the humanitarian crisis deepens, momentum is growing internationally toward recognizing a Palestinian state.
According to The Telegraph, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to issue a statement today, Sunday, confirming Britain’s recognition of Palestine. The move marks a historic shift in British foreign policy and adds further weight to global calls for a two-state solution.
Six Nations to Announce Recognition on Monday
On the sidelines of UN meetings in New York starting Monday, several countries, led by France, are expected to announce formal recognition of Palestine, according to AFP. This comes as part of a coordinated international effort to pressure Israel and revive stalled peace efforts.
Growing List of Recognizers
More than 145 countries have now committed to recognizing Palestine. Recently, Belgium, Australia, Portugal, Canada, and Malta joined the list, alongside earlier European and Caribbean recognizers including Barbados, Ireland, Jamaica, Norway, and Spain in spring 2024.
The recognition drive reflects frustration with the continuation of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and ongoing settlement expansion in the West Bank.
UN and International Pressure
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the world “should not fear Israeli reactions to Palestinian recognition”, accusing Israel of pursuing policies aimed at destroying Gaza and annexing the West Bank.
His remarks followed the UN General Assembly’s overwhelming adoption of the “New York Declaration”, which sets out irreversible, time-bound steps toward a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.
Observers say the UK recognition of Palestine, along with France and others, could become a turning point in rallying the international community toward ending the conflict and achieving a sustainable peace.
