As tension with Iran continue to grow, the UK is set to increase its military presence in the Persian Gulf by sending a second warship to the region, media reports said on Friday.

“Iran demanded Britain on Friday immediately release an oil tanker that British Royal Marines seized last week in Gibraltar,” a foreign ministry spokesman told state news agency IRNA, Reuters reported.

“This is a dangerous game and has consequences ... the legal pretexts for the capture are not valid ... the release of the tanker is in all countries’ interest,” spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, said.

Mousavi  added that the Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned the British ambassador in Tehran four times to complain about the seizure of the Iranian oil tanker.

On the other hand, Iranian state TV quoted a cleric as saying: “Britain will soon be slapped in the face for the capture of an Iranian supertanker last week.”

“Iran’s strong establishment will soon slap Britain in the face for daring to seize the Iranian oil tanker,” cleric Kazem Sedighi told worshippers during Tehran’s Friday prayer sermon.
