The United Kingdom has announced plans to send £5 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan, following reports of severe atrocities in El Fasher after the city fell to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed the aid package during a conference in Bahrain, describing the situation in Darfur as deeply alarming.
The RSF’s recent capture of El Fasher, the last major city in the Darfur region under army control, has triggered reports of targeted killings, sexual violence, and mass starvation.
According to humanitarian sources, around 260,000 people, half of them children, are now trapped in the city with little access to food, clean water, or medical care.
Cooper stated that women and children are bearing the brunt of what she called one of the worst humanitarian crises of the 21st century.
The £5 million package will go toward emergency food supplies, medical support, and assistance for survivors of sexual violence, with about £2 million dedicated specifically to that cause.
Alongside her counterparts from Germany and Jordan, Cooper also urged for an immediate ceasefire in Darfur.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the national army and the RSF since April 2023. The ongoing war has killed tens of thousands, displaced nearly 13 million people, and left millions more facing severe shortages of food and medicine.
