The United Kingdom has pledged to contribute £38 million ($46 million) towards financing artificial intelligence projects globally, with the initial focus being on Africa.
The commitment was revealed on Wednesday by the British Foreign Office and reported by the British news agency PA Media.
This pledge forms part of a larger £80 million cooperation initiative involving the UK, Canada, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at fostering "safe and responsible" AI programs.
This initiative was unveiled on the first day of the "AI Safety Summit" and includes investment in AI research skills within postgraduate studies in Nigeria.
The UK Foreign Office mentions that the project aims to contribute to at least eight AI laboratories within African universities.
This endeavor is geared towards assisting countries across the continent to become influential in global discussions on artificial intelligence.
