The UK is set to close its last remaining coal-fired power station, marking the end of a 142-year legacy of coal-generated electricity in the country.

The Ratcliffe-on-Soar power plant in central England will cease operations on Monday, with its final shift set to conclude at midnight. This closure represents a significant milestone in the UK's transition to cleaner energy.

Ratcliffe-on-Soar has been converting coal into electricity for over 50 years. Still, its era is ending as part of the UK's commitment to phase out coal in favor of renewable energy sources.

The plant’s owner, Uniper, confirmed that around 170 employees will remain for the decommissioning process, which is expected to take two years to complete.

With this shutdown, the UK will become the first G7 nation to eliminate coal power, although countries like Sweden and Belgium achieved this goal earlier. The closure aligns with the country’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The world's first coal-powered electricity station was opened in London by Thomas Edison in 1882, symbolizing the beginning of the coal energy era, which has now officially ended in the UK.
