Real Madrid has been sanctioned by UEFA following racist behavior by some of its supporters during the team’s match against SL Benfica in the UEFA Champions League.
The incident occurred during the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 playoff, where Real Madrid secured qualification after defeating Benfica 3–1 on aggregate.
In its official decision, UEFA announced a €15,000 fine for the Spanish club and ordered the partial closure of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium for one future European match due to discriminatory conduct by fans.
The punishment involves the closure of around 500 seats in the lower section of the south stand at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
However, the stadium closure has been suspended for the time being, meaning it will only be enforced if a similar incident occurs again in future UEFA competitions.
UEFA stated that the sanctions were imposed because of racist and/or discriminatory behavior displayed by supporters during the match.
Real Madrid are preparing for a major European clash against Manchester City next Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, a highly anticipated encounter between two of Europe’s strongest teams.
