Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League affirmed that achieving a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians depends on the will of the two sides, noting that U.S. peace plan announced by the President, Donald Trump reflects a non-binding American vision.

In an official statement, Aboul Gheit said, "We are eyeing the American vision carefully, and we are open to any serious effort made to achieve peace." “However, the first reading of Trump's Middle East peace plan indicates a great violation of Palestinians' legitimate rights.”

He added that a just and sustainable peace cannot be achieved by ignoring the reality of the Israeli’s illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory since 1967, or by working to legalize this occupation.

Arab League chief also said that the basic criterion in judging any peace plan is the extent of its consistency with international law and the principles of fairness and justice.

He added that any serious peace plan must fulfill the aspirations of both parties, and take into consideration their interests.

It is worth mentioning that, U.S. President has proposed the creation of a Palestinian state with a capital in East Jerusalem, in an effort to achieve a breakthrough.

Under the proposed plan, the United States will recognize Israeli settlements on the occupied West Bank and in exchange, Israel would agree to accept a four-year freeze on new settlement activity while Palestinian statehood was being negotiated.
