On Monday, the U.S. State Department expressed its deep concern over the Ethiopian parliamentary elections, which were won by the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who aspires to win a second term in office.

“The elections held in Ethiopia on June 21 were not transparent and fair,” said Samuel Warberg, a US State Department spokesman. “Democracy thrives when institutions of governance are inclusive, transparent, accountable, and responsive to its people.  Elections are not a sufficient sign of democracy or true political reform," he noted.

The US State Department spokesman concluded his speech by saying, "It is very important that Ethiopians come together to end their growing pisions. "We urge politicians and community leaders to renounce violence and refrain from inciting others to violence."
