The Japanese NHK channel reported that two cargo ships collided with each other off the coast of Japan's Wakayama Prefecture.
The channel indicated that one of the two ships was flying the flag of Japan, and the other was the flag of Liberia.
"The freighter registered in Japan sank," it said.
It added that three of the five crew members were rescued, and the whereabouts of the other two were not known.
Reuters reported earlier, quoting navigation agencies, that the movement of ships through the Bosphorus Strait was suspended after a ship that closed the strait ran aground.
