Two Men Cross Egypt With No Money

Two Egyptians hitchhike across the country with only a token EGP 1 each. The story is a reminder that the world isn’t always such a bad place. On the first day of their journey from Cairo to Suez, they met with a host of characters who offer them food, money and a place to stay.

It’s a little corny in places, but likely to give a warm fuzzy feeling to even the most cynical among us.

The two men decided to do that in a way to test and experience the kindness of Egyptian people.

Hitchhiking in Egypt is actually quite easy. When visiting areas outside of Cairo, it may be easier to hitchhike than to search for a taxi.

In places such as St. Catherine's (Mt. Sinai), Siwa Oasis, and the Sinai Peninsula there are numerous opportunities to hitchhike. These are great places to hitchhike since the taxi drivers there have a pseudo-monopoly on transportation, a steady flow of unsuspecting tourists, and are often times difficult to deal with. The people, on the other hand, are often times very friendly to foreigners and willing to help in any way – although very little of them own a private car.

There are plenty of minibuses going everywhere for a cheap price, and which will give you the opportunity of being crowded for hours with locals.

Egypt is situated in the north-east corner of Africa. It is bordered by the Gaza Strip, Libya, and Sudan. The capital of Egypt is Cairo, one of the biggest cities in Africa. It is part of the Arab world, and the population is mostly Muslim.
