Units of the Turkish Navy arrived in Somalia on Wednesday, underscoring growing defence cooperation between Ankara and Mogadishu, according to the Somali National News Agency.
The Turkish naval units were received by Omar Abdi Ali, Somalia’s State Minister at the Ministry of Defence, and Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, Commander of the Somali National Army. The reception was also attended by the State Minister for Ports and Maritime Transport, the Commander of the Somali Navy, and the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia.
Somali officials said the arrival of Turkish warships comes at a time when the Federal Government of Somalia is placing particular emphasis on building and developing the navy and coast guard, as part of broader efforts to strengthen maritime security, protect territorial waters, and enhance coastal surveillance capabilities.
