Former US President Donald Trump has announced that he will immediately end temporary legal protections for Somali immigrants living in Minnesota, a state that is home to the largest Somali community in the United States.

Trump made the declaration on his social media platform on Friday, stating that Minnesota has long been affected by what he described as large-scale financial crimes and community insecurity. His comments targeted Somali groups in the state and called for their return to their country of origin.

Minnesota has served as a major destination for Somali refugees fleeing decades of civil conflict in Somalia. Many were drawn to the state due to its historically welcoming social programs and strong support networks for new arrivals.

The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, which shields eligible foreign nationals from deportation due to conditions such as natural disasters, armed conflict, or severe instability, was established by the US Congress in 1990. Ending this protection would leave many Somali residents vulnerable to removal despite the long-standing humanitarian crisis in Somalia.

Trump’s announcement has sparked renewed debate over immigration policy, refugee protections, and the future of the Somali American community in Minnesota.

The move is expected to intensify political and legal scrutiny, especially as concerns grow about the humanitarian implications for thousands of Somali families who have built their lives in the state.
