Former US President Donald Trump returned to his personal account on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday with a post showing a photo of himself from his detention at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia earlier in the day.

The post calling for donations is the first direct contact with the public on the platform, which blocked it after its supporters attacked Congress on January 6, 2021.

On November 19, the platform changed its position under billionaire Elon Musk, the self-described "free speech supporter" who bought Twitter on October 2.

Trump, who had more than 88 million followers when Twitter banned him, posted a photo on Thursday with the words " Election Interference Never Surrender!"

Twitter suspended Trump's account in January 2021, citing the risk of further incitement to violence after the storming of the US Capitol.

He has been using Twitter and other social media platforms to claim his defeat in the 2020 election was due to widespread voter fraud and to share other conspiracy theories.

And on November 15, Trump began his bid to regain the White House in 2024.
