On Friday, outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump granted the 'Legion of Merit' to Moroccan King Mohammed VI, for his decision to normalize ties with Israel, according to Sputnik News agency.

The Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, is a rarely-awarded, prestigious decoration that can only be bestowed by the President, typically to chiefs of state or heads of government of other countries.

In a statement, the White House said, "The Moroccan King's decision to resume relations with Israel has reshaped the scene in the Middle East and North Africa in a positive way."

"King Mohammed VI has worked for more than two decades to promote a deep and lasting partnership with the U.S. in all fields," the statement read.

Last month, the 1st direct commercial flight between Israel and Morocco landed in the Moroccan capital Rabat.

The flight comes after the two countries agreed to establish full diplomatic relations in a US-brokered peace deal, which was signed earlier this month.

Israel and Morocco are also expected to reopen diplomatic offices and promote economic cooperation.

Earlier this year, Kushner also oversaw the normalization of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan.

The agreements marked the first recognition of the Jewish state by Arab nations in a quarter of a century.
