Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy is set to inaugurate the tombs of Amenhotep and Samut on Thursday in the Khokha archaeological area near the Ramesseum on Luxor’s West Bank.

The event will also be attended by Hisham El-Leithy and Luxor Governor Abdel Mottaleb Emara.

The opening comes as part of Egypt’s continued efforts to promote archaeological tourism and showcase newly restored ancient sites to international visitors.

The Khokha necropolis is one of the important archaeological zones within the Theban Necropolis and contains several tombs dating back to ancient Egyptian dynasties.

The inauguration follows the official reopening of the tomb of Amenhotep III in the Valley of the Kings in October last year after extensive restoration and conservation work that lasted nearly two decades.

The tomb was reopened to tourists and visitors for the first time since 1799 following a large-scale restoration project carried out in cooperation between Egypt, UNESCO, and the Japanese government.

Restoration work on the tomb took place over three phases between 2004 and 2024, focusing on preserving wall paintings and improving the site’s structural condition.

The first phase lasted from 2004 to 2010, followed by a second stage from 2010 to 2017, while the final restoration phase was completed between 2023 and 2024.

Egypt has intensified efforts in recent years to restore and reopen major archaeological sites as part of a broader strategy aimed at boosting tourism revenues and preserving the country’s cultural heritage.
