Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks and his actress-singer wife, Rita Wilson, were among the first celebrities to be diagnosed with coronavirus.

Hanks, 63, said Tuesday that they are both doing well, stressing on the need for people to follow the necessary protocol in fighting the pandemic.

The Oscar winner also shared his opinion on mask-wearing and about the importance of wearing a face mask, during a press conference for his upcoming Apple TV+ film, "Greyhound".

Hanks noted that it is a ‘basic’ thing everyone should be doing to prevent the spread of the virus.

"There is really only three things we can do to get to tomorrow, wear a mask, social distance, and wash our hands," he added.

Hanks continued: "Those things are so simple, so easy, if anybody cannot find practice those three very basic things – I just think shame on you. Get on with it, do your part. It is very basic. If you’re driving a car, you don’t go too fast, you use your turn signal, and you avoid hitting pedestrians. My Lord, it’s common sense."

Hanks stated that Hollywood has "no idea" when it can return to production.

He added: "I have no idea when I will go back to work. Nobody has any idea of when they will go back to work. But the time will come. We just don't know when. Everything comes into play – there's financial concerns, there's legal concerns, liabilities."

Hanks and Wilson contracted the virus in March while in Australia where he was working on Elvis Presley biopic, while his wife, who is also a singer-songwriter, performed concerts in Sydney and Brisbane, before testing positive for the virus.

On March 16, they were discharged from an Australian hospital where they were in isolation since testing positive for the coronavirus.

The couple returned to their residence in Los Angeles where they continued to self-isolate.

Coming soon: Greyhound was originally set to be released in theatres but as the pandemic continues, Apple purchased the film and it will premiere on Apple TV+ on July 10

The pandemic had also left its impact on the actor's new Navy drama film "Greyhound", which he also penned the screenplay.

The film had been due for release in movie theatres in May, however, it was pushed back to June 12 due to coronavirus.

With movie theatres still shuttered in the main across the country, Apple purchased the film for streaming release on its premium subscription service.

The World War II story stars Hanks as a U.S. Navy Captain who is given command of a destroyer code-named Greyhound in his first wartime assignment, who despite his inexperience, he finds himself in charge of an allied convoy that's being stalked by Nazi U-Boats.

Talking about his new film, the Oscar-winning actor stated that the struggles the characters experience in the film feel as relevant as ever.

Hanks revealed that he sees similarities between the state of the world in “Greyhound,” and what people are going through today with coronavirus.

It is worth mentioning that the novel coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, China, and has infected more than one million people and killed over 234,139 worldwide. It also hit several celebrities and top political figures around the world.

On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus a global pandemic as the new virus has rapidly spread to more than 800,000 people from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.

Transmission of viruses between humans happens when someone comes into contact with an infected person’s secretions, such as droplets in a cough.

Coronavirus can also be transmitted by coming into contact with something an infected person has touched and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

It is known that older people appear to be more vulnerable to the effects of the emerging virus.

The virus caused complete paralysis in all activities and events with large gatherings worldwide due to concerns over the spread of the virus.
