The renowned Egyptian filmmaker Atef Salem passed away 22 years ago, in 2002, leaving behind more than 32 feature films as well as a number of documentaries and short films

Born on July 23, 1927, in Sudan, Salem is widely regarded as one of Egypt’s greatest realist directors and creative writers of all time.

He made his artistic debut as an actor in the movie Magda (1943), then worked as an assistant director for several directors, then as a director.

Throughout Egyptian cinema history, there has never been a director who was connected to a certain cinema movement like Salem was to cinematic realism.

He is known for Khan El Khalili (1967), Nahna El Talamiza (1959), El Hermane (1953), Mother of the Bride (1963), and The Grandson (1974).

Many of his films were scripted by the novelist Naguib Mahfouz.

His 1967 film Khan El Khalili won much praise from critics and was nominated at the 5th Moscow International Film Festival.

He was married to the acclaimed actress Nabila Ebeid.
