Today (April 15) marks the 105th anniversary of the birth of the legendary Egyptian actress Amina Rizk, the so-called "Art’s Nun".

Born on April 15, 1910, Rizk was an iconic film star, well-known throughout the region, and was very popular for seven decades, spanning from the 1930s to the 1990s.

Rizk made her film debut in "Souad the Gypsy" (1928, Jack Schutz), which was the third film in the history of Egyptian feature films.

Despite the fact that the film was silent, and Rizk played a supporting role, her performance was enough to open up new horizons for her. She went on to act in about 250 films during a career spanning nearly eight decades.

Rizk’s breakthrough role came when she starred alongside Youssef Wahbi in the first Egyptian talkie, "Sons of the Aristocrats" (1932, Mohamed Karim). As a result, she became a common denominator in Youssef Wahbi’s early films, which he also directed, such as "The Defence" (1935).

Throughout her career, she played a delicate, idealistic girl, a far cry from her tragic roles on stage.

She is also well-known for her notable roles, such as "Sons of the Poor" (1942, Youssef Wahbi), "Les Misérables" (1944, Kamal Selim), "I Want a Solution" (1975, Said Marzouk), "His Sisters" (1976, Henri Barakat) and "It’s Really a Respectable Family" (1979, Fouad Al-Mohandes).

She breathed her last in 2003 at the age of 93.
