Canada issued orders on Sunday to evacuate thousands of citizens in the province of British Columbia due to the widespread spread of forest fires and their increasing size over the past few days.

According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), authorities urged residents living in the northern part of the province to head south after the fires consumed nearly 17 kilometers since they erupted on Friday.

The evacuation order is the largest since the start of the wildfire season in the province, with the number of evacuees due to fires reaching 4,300 people so far, according to the latest government statistics.

Drought has exacerbated the risks of forest fires, especially with strong winds and high temperatures.

Canada witnessed a record number of forest fires last year, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate from various parts of British Columbia province.
